They have a weekly remix contest for the members. This week, Peter Gabriel announced a contest where you get to remix the song Games Without Frontiers with all the original tracks. You can add any non-copyrighted or original material to make your mix.

I am not, by any means, a pro at this, but I have dabbled in it for a while now. Just the thrill of working with professional material from a classic song was plain awesome. For my mix, I chose a more minimalistic approach. It was a great learning opportunity and I will most surely participate in other similar projects.

As you browse the other entries to the contest, check out the remix from my friend Robert Marchand. Now THAT is what a pro can come up with!!!

Circa Survive - Imaginary Enemy

I just love these guys.

John Mayall - The Supernatural

This is a sneaky post. I don't really want to talk about John Mayall. I do want to talk about Peter Green, an amazing and influential guitar virtuoso who influenced the blues and rock worlds. But sometimes, genius is not a gift. Most of us know the sad story of Syd Barrett and his work with Pink Floyd; his drug abuse and psychotic episodes, his brain too busy playing tricks on him. Peter Green experienced the lure of Timothy Leary's magic medication. He also went through long periods of psychiatric problems. Nonetheless, his influence was tremendous. The list of musicians reads like a who's who of rock and blues heaven.

The piece The Supernatural is one of his first instrumental pieces as a member of John Mayall's band The Bluesbreakers.

You may not be aware, but you know more of Peter Green than you might think. He left The Bluesbreakers with two other members to form a band that is still well-known today. But let's just look at a short chronology of the Bluesbreakers to understand the depth of musicians that, at one time or another passed through Mayall's legendary band. After he left The Yardbirds to play the blues with John Mayall, Eric Clapton moved on with co-Bluesbreaker Jack Bruce to form the band Cream with Ginger Baker. That is when Peter Green hitched up. He later left to form a band with two other Bluesbreakers, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. The band was called Fleetwood Mac. When Green left, Mick Taylor hopped aboard but also left and joined The Rolling Stones.

As you can see, The Bluesbreakers were a great place to network! By the way, Jimmy Page also produced one of the Bluesbreakers' singles, "I'm Your Witchdoctor".

Blues living legend B.B. King once said of Green, "He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats." That is possibly the greatest testimonial a guitarist can get.

Now, how do you know Peter Green? Well, he composed Black Magic Woman, later made popular (understatement, really!) by Santana.

John Mayall - The Supernatural
Get the Mp3 Player Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! Scotland loves their music. Be it punk, folk or just plain kickass rock, they love it. And they support their artists. Amy Macdonald's music brings me back to the 70's folk sound; lyrics that stand out like poetry set to music, guitar strumming and a voice that strikes a difference.

I am highlighting the song Run although it was not the song from the album that rose highest on the charts. I love my kids. As much as I bring new music to them, they will introduce me to some very interesting (and good) artists.

High school friends Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel got together in 2007 to explore the musical side of their artistic projects. After a few singles and two EPs, they published their first album Eyelid Movies. Not rock, not really electronica, somewhat alternative, definitely pop following newer tendencies. This is their second album as a duo. The quirky folky voice stylings give the songs a very personal touch. It seems as if their solo performances have followed through to this CD. The songs alternate between Angus and Julia vocals. Don't look for anything beyond smooth and very listenable moody folk sounds.

I'm highlighting one of Julia's songs, Hold On, a very airy love song.

Angus & Julia Stone - Hold On
Get the Mp3 Player Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! Happy, happy, happy!!!! This morning I downloaded the brand new Circa Survive CD Blue Sky Noise. Since I pre-ordered it, I got a one week advance download.... Sweet! I'm still digesting it. As much as Letting Go was different from Juturna, This one is a definite evolution. I love when bands use their experience to move forward rather than simply be a faint copy of their past recordings. On this CD, Anthony Green's musings from his solo album are present, as well as his new found acoustic guitar skills. A very convincing CD that, still, may not be well received by hard-core fans. Many nice discoveries for the next auditions!!!!

Circa Survive - Glass Arrows
Get the Mp3 Player Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! Although it has been coverd quite often in the past, it is currently being replayed in a lounge-style cover by singer Sia. But that is not the version I am posting. From New Jersey, in her early singing gigs, Nicole Atkins was often requested to cover songs by local compadres Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen. In 2008, her cover EP Digs Other People's Songs caught attention. So, I googled them. Hmmmm, not much. All I know is they are from San Francisco and have performed with members of the 80's band Bauhaus. Trying to pinpoint the genre is always fun. From a web page, their style would be "dark, gothic/post-punk energy with modern, indie passion, and shoegaze, wall-of-sound ethereality". Okee-dokee, if you say so. I just like it. As is the case, I discovered Camera Obscura in 2006, and Let's Get Out of This Country, and this was their third CD. Brit Pop is perfectly healthy. The problem is, the highly promoted Brit Pop artists in North America are mostly from the cookie cutter reality show flavour. Usually, in a music store, I'll take a glancing look at the top sellers display in case something catches my eye. Then I'll move to the new releases, and finally, the listening stands. If nothing appeals to me, I'll pick up four or five CDs that seem intriguing for different reasons, or those of which I have read a review, and head straight for the information desk or listening stations. Many nice discoveries..... such as Camera Obscura.

It annoys me to no ends when I hear people say, "There is no good music anymore." It's just that we don't get to hear it. There is not much fostering of new acts, building them up. Everybody wants to hear the new song promoted on the new iPod commercial. Hit and miss I tell you! Proof of that is the fast growing indie record business. Camera Obscura's CD Let's Get Out of This Country was voted number four album of the 2000-20109 decade by indie magazine Under the Radar.

Camera Obscura - Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! I don't think I need to write much info in this post about who is Carlos Santana; pretty much a given. Saying that he is one of the greatest guitar players of our time is merely repeating the obvious. Apart from his technical and artistic abilities, he has managed to record music in such a variety of genres with success, moving from the very latin sounds of the early years, joining another guitar wizard, John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra) in a form of jazz-fusion, and now, a huge name in popular music through his associations with current rock and pop artists.

Caravanserai is, in my opinion, his most emotionally charged album. It flows around a very personal form of music. We feel the latin roots, we sense the technical wizardry of jazz, but there is a sense of voyeurism into Santana's soul when we listen to the record. Song of the Wind is, by far, my favourite track of any Santana album. And I can only assume that guitar players who appreciate an inspired guitar solo will love this track.

Santana - Song of the Wind
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! I like to think they are the new pop. Emily Haines, the lead singer, is possibly the most enthralling female singer in rock today. She is a beast of live performances, rock sexy and charismatic... and a great voice. Emily has a couple of solo CDs and, being with the Arts & Crafts label, which mainly promotes Canadian artists, she had a few stints with the mega-morphic band Broken Social Scene along with Feist.

Metric - Gimme Sympathy
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! You may know them for their #1 hit Heaven Coming Down. That CD brought them full circle in their style and influences. Labelled as blus and progressive rock, Jeff Martin (lead singer) brought a sound to the band, heavily influenced by Indian and Middle-Eastern rhythms and sounds. Still, they had their roots in 70's rock such as Led Zeppelin. This is most evident in the album Interzone Mantras. This album was released to mixed reviews. The international sound was more subdued than in earlier recordings, but the music was much more mature. The Led Zeppelin influence is quite evident in the song The Master & Margarita which is quite reminiscent of the song Achille's Last Stand from the Presence album.

The Tea Party - The Master & Margarita
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! I have been auto-censoring myself lately by not re-posting from an artist or band I have already talked about, as well as trying to post songs that would have more universal appeal. That's not me! So, if you like alternative music, today you are going to have fun.

I really enjoy listening to the band 30 Seconds To Mars. Full of energy, no fear for using electronics in ways that will either give you a "déjà vu" or a "what the...?" moment. The song Attack is from the CD A Beautiful Lie; first song on the album, kicking you in the pants to get you started!

30 Seconds To Mars - Attack
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! This is one song that, from day one, I simply loved it. I have no idea what magical spirit was haunting and inhabiting Keith Richards (well, I may have one idea) but the flow of emotions in his guitar playing is simply beautiful. The whole arrangement just brings to some place inside me that feels the music.

Although I have recently move slightly away from classic rock, this song will always amaze me and put me in a wonderful trance. Granted, as a guitar player, I find the riff and solo some of the most beautiful in rock.

The Rolling Stones - Time Waits For No One
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! Sorry, I am on vacation and haven't really spent much time thinking about blogging. But I'm back, and I hope I can bring you more good music (according to me... hehehehe)

What do we have here? Who are City And Colour? Actually, who IS City And Colour? The name is an alias for singer and guitarist Dallas (City) Green (Colour) of the band Alexisonfire. This is a very mellow album for someone out of a post-hardcore band! City And Colour won a Juno award (yeah, he is Canadian, eh, but the spelling of "colour" must have given it away) in 2007 for this album released back in 2005. The songs on this album are very introspective; great material for emo-alternative, put they take on a deeper feeling as they are, totally acoustic.

City And Colour - Comin' Home
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! I will have week upon week of grooving and listening to all this music.

Seeing as I was one of the unfortunate (really? nah!) to not have a Valentine this year, I wanted to find the perfect antithesis Valentine's day song. I found it in Mandi's stash.

I know very little about Kate Havnevik apart from the fact she is British and sounds a heck of a lot like Imogen Heap. The song is about love from a distance and the art (or unease) of making your move. This is my "Other side of Valentine's Day" song.

Oh, and actually, if you're worried for me, I honestly did not mind being alone tonight. The heart gets what the heart needs. Yet, I still haven't posted a song from one of my favourite Nova Scotia bands, Wintersleep.

Meaghan Smith is, yes, once again, another record store listening booth purchase. When music companies don't know how to categorize an artist, Alternative & Punk seems to be the most common pigeon hole. But, I admit, she is hard to categorize. It's swing, it's jazz, it' contemporary, it has elements of hip-hop and dub. It is a very original production, a bit quirky and surprising. If you need a reference, the sound is a bit of a mix of Camera Obscura, Nora Jones and k.d. lang, but with a twist. She also got a bit of media attention with songs featured on One Tree Hill and Grey's Anatomy.

My gift to you today is a bit of Valentine's Day in advance. Okay, I admit, I love to listen to the great guitar players of the 70s. For most people, Dave Mason's name doesn't necessarily come to mind as quickly as Clapton, Page and others of that era. I have him in in the top spots of my list. Unfortunately, the band that started his career, Traffic, was more known for its trippy songs than for chartbusters. Their album John Barleycorn Must Die, put out when they reunited in 1970, was an instant classic, but turned out to be their swan song. All four members went on to their individual solo endeavours. Steve Winwood, Dave Mason and Jim Capaldi came up with a few albums while Chris Wood was mostly a session musician.

Alone Together was Mason's first record and contained quite a few classic rock songs. Pulling out of the psychedelic stylings of Traffic, his guitar licks remain some of the most notable hooks of the classic rock era. And, as it was the case for many bands of the 70s, lengthy musical pieces were included on their records. This the the case for the seven minute plus song Look At You Look At Me. The guitar solo at the end is one of my all-time favourites, not by its complexity because it is quite simple, but by the melody and mood it conveys.

Dave Mason - Look At You Look At Me
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! Moody and melodic, he often reflects the sound of the artists he has worked with. It's about time you all got a kick in the pants. And illScarlett is just the band to do that. This Toronto area band most closely represents the phrases "grass roots" and "paying your dues". They started out by setting up their generator powered equipment in the parking lot of the Vans Warped Tour. The Tour founder, Kevin Lymon, invited them to the Tour post-party, where they just killed!!! Their two self-financed EPs, EPdemic and All Day With It got enough attention to get a major deal for their latest album 1UP! with Sony BMG.

The mix of pop/ska/punk/rock sound of their music is well represented by the song Nothing Special from All Day With It.

See foot. Formerly the singer/songwriter of the late 70s early 80s synth-pop band Japan. In 1998, as the group disbanded, Sylvian moved to more introspective music. Throughout the next decades, he teamed up with musicians such as Robert Fripp, Talvin Singh and Andy Summers. The music can be haunting but also difficult to approach in some cases. Experimentation guides many of his songs. The CD Dead Bee On A Cake was not welcomed with acclaim by some critics who would have preferred a string of shorter experimentations. On the other hand, those who wished to experience the depth of Sylvian's introspection were very pleased with the outcome. the instrumentation is eclectic, guitar riffs punch through at unexpected moments, and the use of more ethnic instruments gives the songs a meditative mood.

Granted, some of the songs are quite long. The wonderful I Surrender, with it's quirky saxophone, runs over nine minutes, and the meditative and mind-travelling Krishna Blue is eight minutes dreamy tablas and whispy oriental flute.

I must admit, I discovered David Sylvian in one of the darkest times in my life and, instead of dipping into sad songs and "bring-me-down" lyrics, I took Sylvian's inspirational and meditative road. You never feel that the destination the song brings you is the final one. You are simply led to new discoveries.

His music and his voice are entrancing, but it is Sylvian's lyrics that make his music so pleasant. He is truly a poet of our times. As a side note, the song Darkest Dreaming was highlighted as the closing credits of the CSI:Crime Scene Investigation episode where Grissom finally admits to his hearing loss and gets comfort (we suppose) from a lady friend who runs a brothel in Las Vegas. Interesting parallel!

David Sylvian - Thalheim
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! Apple had a huge string of artists selling their songs for the iPod ads. The Motorola Razr ninja-style cellphone throwing fight between a guy and a girl in a subway was their first big media exposure with the song La Disco from the album We Are Pilots. Last year, around the same time they came out with their newest CD Season of Poison, you could hear them doing a great cover version of Peter Schilling's song Major Tom for the Lincoln MKS luxury car.

The album We Are Pilots was one of the great Synth-Rock records this decade. I was just hoping they would be consistent in their second album. Great surprise! Season of Poison has the same crafty arrangements but, much to my delight, was more in the "rock" side of the term Synth-Rock; more guitars, more power in the voices (if that could even be possible!)

Shiny Toy Guns - Money For That
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! He eventually toured with Suzanne Vega, Aimee Mann and John Mayer. In 2006, he came out with a gem of an album. His music is very simple yet very moving. On the CD "Stay Under the Stars" he even included a live track, an intriguing arrangement of the classic "Great Balls of Fire".

"Louis Louis" is simply a very beautiful melody which I hope you will appreciate.

Teitur - Louis Louis
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! People from Stars? I want a new album!!!!

Stars rose to critical acclaim on the Arts & Crafts music label. The label has spawned many artists and bands such as Feist, Metric (and Emily Haines) and Broken Social Scene. Possibly, all of which I will be posting songs some day soon.

Stars' album "Heart"s was critically acclaimed in the UK. They have had much more of a cult following in North America, but those who have discovered them really love their music. Every song by the album "Set Yourself On Fire" was remixed by other artists for the CD "Do You Trust Your Friends?" Personally, I prefer the remix CD.

The song I am posting is from "In Our Bedroom After The War". A very creative amalgam of harmonies and the beautiful voices of Torquil Campbell and Amy Milan.

Stars - Take Me To The Riot
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! I can't actually put my finger on what it is. There is a lot of emotion in lead singer Gareth Jones' voice, and the guitar has a good crunch to it without being overwhelming. I'm posting the song "Mayday (M'aidez)" for it's punch, but the CD has a few more stylings, from light alternative to an almost progressive groove. A very interesting CD. Their earlier CD "As Far As The Eye Can See" does not fall anywhere near mainstream and has very original and inventive composition and arrangements and also worth looking into.

People in Planes - Mayday (M'aidez)
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! Had a nice week? Finally, I have some time to care care of pleasure (as opposed to business)

Sophie Milman, Russian-born, lives in Montreal and incredibly beautiful! But much more, one of the most beautiful voices in music these days. Imagine all the great divas crammed into a single voice, and with soul! She won 2008 Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year for "Make Someone Happy".

The song I'm posting is from her latest album "Take Love Easy". Again, I'm going on a ledge and not posting a song outside of what you'd expect. No, not a jazz song, a little more mainstream, but one where her soul can be felt.

What a voice!!!!

Sophie Milman - I Can't Make You Love Me
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! Positive thinking songs, great beats, great hooks. And, this time, I'm not going for more obscure songs on the album (New Surrender). If you're going to go all the way, go for the signature song. Any time I want to feel good, Feel Good Drag does the job!

Just one twist for this post. I'll be putting up two versions of the song from the Special Edition version of the CD. First will be the original version, the you can compare it with the acoustic version. One is a "kick you in the pants and get moving" version whereas the other is somewhat haunting.

So, feel good!

Anberlin - Feel Good Drag
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! I had recently purchased Circa Survive's On Letting Go and wanted more of a similar sound. I was quite intrigued by the sounds on the CD. Without really being all over the place, many songs have very distinct moods. "The New National Anthem" is possibly the closest you'll get to the good old protest songs of the '70s. This is very sad news. We need to defeat cancer, we must.

2010-01-03 - Press release - sad news
Official press release
For immediate release
In Montreal, Canada: Sunday January 3rd, 2010

The singer Lhasa de Sela passed away in her Montreal home on the night of January 1st 2010, just before midnight.

She succumbed to breast cancer after a twenty-one month long struggle, which she faced with courage and determination.

Throughout this difficult period, she continued to touch the lives of those around her with her characteristic grace, beauty and humor. The strength of her will carried her once again into the recording studio, where she completed her latest album, followed by successful record launches in Montreal at the Théatre Corona and in Paris at the Théatre des Bouffes du Nord. Two concerts in Iceland in May were to be her last.

She was forced to cancel a long international tour scheduled for autumn 2009. A projected album of the songs of Victor Jara and Violeta Parra would also remain unrealized.

Lhasa de Sela was born on September 27, 1972, in Big Indian, New York.

Lhasa's unusual childhood was marked by long periods of nomadic wandering through Mexico and the U.S., with her parents and sisters in the school bus which was their home. During this period the children improvised, both theatrically and musically, performing for their parents on a nightly basis. Lhasa grew up in a world imbued with artistic discovery, far from conventional culture.

Later Lhasa became the exceptional artist that the entire world discovered in 1997 with La Llorona, followed by 2003's The Living Road, and 2009's self-titled LHASA. These three albums have sold over a million copies world-wide.

It is difficult to describe her unique voice and stage presence, which earned her iconic status in many countries throughout the world, but some Journalists have described it as passionate, sensual, untameable, tender, profound, troubling, enchanting, hypnotic, hushed, powerful, intense, a voice for all time.

Lhasa had a unique way of communicating with her public. She dared to open her heart on stage, allowing her audience to experience an intimate connection and communion with her. She profoundly affected and inspired many people throughout the cities and countries she visited.

An old friend of Lhasa's, Jules Beckman, offered these words:

"We have always heard something ancestral coming through her. She has always spoken from the threshold between the worlds, outside of time. She has always sung of human tragedy and triumph, estrangement and seeking with a Witness's wisdom. She has placed her life at the feet of the Unseen."

Lhasa leaves behind her partner Ryan, her parents Alejandro and Alexandra, her step-mother Marybeth, her 9 brothers and sisters (Gabriela, Samantha, Ayin, Sky, Miriam, Alex, Ben, Mischa and Eden), her 16 nieces and nephews, her cat Isaan, and countless friends, musicians, and colleagues who have accompanied her throughout her career, not to mention her innumerable admirers throughout the world.

Her family and close friends were able to mourn peacefully during the last two days, and greatly appreciated this meaningful period of quiet intimacy. Funeral and services will be held privately.

It has snowed more than 40 hours in Montreal since Lhasa's departure.

Official Site

Lhasa de Sela - Soon This Space Will Be Too Small
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! And, like many bands from the area, they have a bigger following outside the province. There is something about the music market in Montreal that makes it hard to get airplay if you are an alternative or indie band. Outside of a few university radio stations, we have to rely on 99.9 The Buzz (WBTZ) in Burlington Vermont for our alternative fix. At least, Quebec City has 98.1 CHOI RadioX as a promotion medium, and they actively promote local talent.

Today's post is from Your Favorite Enemies (YFE). How I first heard of this band has an interesting anecdote. YFE promote and sell their own music (2 EPs to date) through their own indie label, Hopeful Tragedy Records. One Saturday afternoon I was at home, doing whatever home stuff there was to do, when the doorbell rang. When I saw her standing there, fishing through her rucksack, I thought to myself, "Uh-oh, fund raiser!" And I am a sucker for donating, I'm sensing my dollars slipping from my pockets. The girl finally holds up a CD, neatly wrapped in cellophane. Now, I'm intrigued. She tells me about this local band trying to sell their CDs in order to prep for a big tour. Weeeeeellllllllll.... I am also a sucker for experimenting new music. So we talk about the band, I buy the EP (And If I Was To Die In the Morning… Would I Still Be Sleeping With You), and put it on I knew this band had a fighting chance!!! Eventually, my son bought me the second EP (Love is Promise Whispering Goodbye) as a Christmas present.

And they are doing very well outside of Quebec, touring with Simple Plan and other bands. They are also spokespeople for Amnesty International and set up an organization called Rock N Rights. But their biggest gamble became their biggest success! They coulnd't get prpomoted here, so they took their show on the road, Tokyo... They were warned that it would be their biggest mistake. Instead, they were a huge hit. How big? They have three songs published on the soundtrack of the newest Final Fantasy game offering Dissidia: Final Fantasy. Any finger biting happening back at home? Doh!

The song Open Your Eyes is on both EPs, a different rocking arrangement on the second with an acoustic version.

Your Favorite Enemies - Open Your Eyes
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! Nothing much to say, this CD purchase is the result of too much time at the listening booth. The cover art was pretty cool so I picked it up and had a listen. The sound throughout is very diverse. Sorry I haven't posted in a week, too much to do. Since we're in a festive mood, I thought something upbeat would be appropriate. I had to be careful which Fall Out Boy song I should pick since they sound so happy even when singing about breakups and bad things!

I totally, but totally flew over their first album. Didn't want to buy it, thought it was girlie bubble-gum music. Earlier this year I heard a short snippet from the song "I Don't Care" and thought, "That ain't bad at all!" So I dragged myself to the closest HMV record store (no shameless plug here, I assure you), picked it up and now, the band that took its name from a Simpsons' fictional character in the fictional cartoon series Radioactive Man has been a regular in my iPod since.

Why pick Tiffany Blews? Vocals, rhythm, energy, lyrics, hooks... pick whatever you like, it's just a fun song. Fapp Out Boy is great driving music.

Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! Like, real mellow.

The first time I heard this guy was as a young camp counselor. One of the other counselors had just come back from the UK, her father was a diplomat that was appointed there. She turned me on to many different artists that don't necessarily cross the Big Pond. John Martyn was one of those. I was instantly hooked. Suddenly, much less music from him and then, recently, I had learned of his passing and the troubling life he led. His struggle with addictions, amputated of both legs because of the life he led. I felt a twinge in my heart.

I'm sharing with you a more obscure song from his album Cooltide. The emotion he could bring out in a song is wonderfully transparent in Same Difference. Thank you, John, for the worlds you've dragged me to.

John Martyn - Same Difference
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! I learned today that Circa Survive is coming out with a new album in early 2010 (if not late 2009..... w00t!!!) I suppose I'll be posting something new from them soon enough. For now, a song from their previous album.

There's something about this band that makes it one of my favourite in the past decade. Is it Anthony Green's vocals? Is it the almost lyrical guitar sound? Is it the pounding and relentless rhythm? All of the above, man! The sound is so tight yet you can feel they are not holding back. The band toured with so many big names such as Thrice, Rise Against and Billy Talent, they deserve a place of their own. I'm hoping Anthony Green foray into the solo album "had-to-do-it" project gives the band new ideas because it would be a shame for such a talented group of musicians to simply copy their last album.

While I patiently wait for their new album, this is the opening song for their second CD called On Letting Go.

Circa Survive - Living Together

Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! Most of the earlier bands had some appeal, but you just knew it wouldn't last because of the huge clash of egos. Them crooked Vultures got a lot of buzz because of who the members were. Dave Grohl, drummer of the defunct band Nirvana and founder of Foo Fighters; Josh Homme, the founder and last member remaining in the band Queens Of The Stone Age; John Paul Jones, bassist for the legendary band Led Zeppelin.

Grohl is not a newcomer to extra-curricular projects. He played drums on Queens Of The Stone Age's album Songs For The Deaf with Josh Homme and toured with the band to promote the album. He also played with Tenacious D... among other projects.

So, Grohl has already worked with Homme. Where does Jones come from in all of this? It's reported that, 2005, Grohl was already working on this match up. Following that, rumours. No big hooplah, just more hearsay. Something like, "Hey guys, did you hear about Grohl jamming with Homme and Jones in the back of the garage?" Results? Cut out the big egos and put three guys playing music and having fun doing it. Grohl admitted he doesn't know how long the band will be together. He just wants it too be fun. When the fun is over, so is the band.

The album is noteworthy because the styles and influences of the three members can be felt throughout with the predominance of one or the other in each song. The song I am highlighting is great to listen to for the nostalgic boomers who were turned on by Cream. Not a copy, far from it, but close enough to appreciate the punch a three man rock band can generate.

Rock on!!!! Distinct Society. This is one creative guy. Distinct Society is just one of the many genres Bob has delved into. He has created soundtracks for many various projects, and (he'll kill me when he reads this) he was one of the creative engines for a local Montreal band of the 70's called "Et cetera". Since, depending on my mood, I'm into the dub/electronica/drums&bass/etc... scene, this one kicked in nice on my iPod. A bit reminiscent of DJ Shadow, Kid Loco and others, it has a great groove... very listenable!

This song is not commercially available, so thanks for sharing, Bob.

Bob's SoundCloud page

Distinct Society - What Gets To Me
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! Nothing huge, nice arrangements. The "alternative" genre(is it really a genre or just a catch-all) is too wide for the new bands coming out these days. Other sub-genres such as "emo" also include bands that don't fit in a spot yet. That's what I like about today's music. It doesn't necessarily fit in the classic pigeon holes. Whoever says there is no good music out these days hasn't listened to these bands/artists.

30 Seconds to Mars - Hurricane
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! I was more familiar with Alex Turner of the band Arctic Monkeys. Nonetheless, their joint project hit a chord with me and this beautifully produced pop album will surely remain as one of those albums you put on and say to yourself, "Damn, that's good!" In my humble opinion, this is one of the best pop albums of 2008.

The first track I heard was from the video clip for "The Age Of The Understatement" and was blown away. The lush orchestrations, the retro sound, the harmonies and arrangements... it just all fit together perfectly. My favourites tend to go to the more obscure songs on each album. On this new CD, Battle Studies, I really hooked on to Assasin. As always, Mayer comes up with fabulous guitar licks. The layered guitar sounds bring out so much emotion. I found a way to add streamed audio to this blog and I will be testing it as we go along.

Like I said, I love pretty much all genres, some more than others, so don't be dismayed if you don't like the current post, there are much more on the way. Since I was a youngster, before my teens, I was hooked on music. I couldn't just settle on one style, I just loved music that sounded great. It could be anything from the Top 20 on the pop board, jazz or the beginnings of the prog-rock movement. I admit to liking some very hard to grasp music, sounds that be be quite unpleasant to some, but when you listen and let yourself be carried away by the melodies and arrangements, even some of the hardest rock songs can be calming and even sound like a ballad (yes, a loud ballad, but a ballad nonetheless.

I must also point out a basic principle I live by. If I publish a song, I actually own the CD or have purchased the song online. I truly believe in the right of an artist to get the royalty due for his or her work since it is the result of hard work and a creative mind and must be compensated accordingly.

So, let's start with a song from an artist I just discovered. He may be better known to some for his song Collide or the video for Be There. For me, So Stung has so much emotion, I just fell for it.

Howie Day - So Stung
Get the Google Audio Widget widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox!
